If your in an enclosed spot like an animal park or zoo, you might get away with a 200mm, but would be happier with more if you can afford it.
If out in the sticks, 300mm minimum, but if you can get more, ie., 500mm, go for it.
Zoom lenses are used to get "closer" to a subject, without actually having to get physically close to a subject. Its pretty basic.
The longer a lens, the need for a tripod increases.
